Uganda and Tanzania Sign $3.5bn oil Pipeline Deal

Tanzania and Uganda have signed an agreement allowing for the construction of a 1,445 km (898 miles) crude oil pipeline. The $3.5bn (£2.7m) project will connect Uganda's oil fields to Tanzania's port of Tanga. The signing ceremony was attended by the presidents of both countries. Oil reserves were found in Uganda in 2006 but production has been delayed partly by a lack of infrastructure including an export pipeline. A start date for construction has not yet been announced for what is set to become East Africa's first major oil pipeline. But there are warnings the project could come at a huge cost to some Ugandan communities. Kampala businessman Mathew Kanyamunyu, a prime suspect in the shooting of child rights activist Kenneth Akena Watmon, has this afternoon confessed to the crime and agreed to pay reparation for the offence. Kanyamunyu was arrested in 2016 on suspicion that he drew a gun at Akena after he reportedly accidentally knocked his car in a parking lot in Lugogo, Kampala. Akena had reportedly gone to apologise to Kanyamunyu after the accident, but Kanyamunyu instead lowered the window of his car and shot him with a pistol at close range. A memorial service has been held for Mercy Baguma, the Ugandan asylum seeker whose body was found in a Glasgow flat with her crying child. The vigil took place in Elder Park in the city's Govan area. Eric Nnanna, father of Ms Baguma's one-year-old son Adriel, called the police four days after he last heard from her. Ms Baguma's body was found in the hallway of her Govan flat on Saturday 22 August while Adriel was found in his cot. Ms Baguma's body was flown from Edinburgh to Entebbe, Uganda, on Friday.
