China and Taiwan clash over Wikipedia edits

China and Taiwan clash over Wikipedia edits

FEATURED, Latest News, TECH
Ask Google or Siri: "What is Taiwan?" "A state", they will answer, "in East Asia". But earlier in September, it would have been a "province in the People's Republic of China". For questions of fact, many search engines, digital assistants and phones all point to one place: Wikipedia. And Wikipedia had suddenly changed. The edit was reversed, but soon made again. And again. It became an editorial tug of war that - as far as the encyclopedia was concerned - caused the state of Taiwan to constantly blink in and out of existence over the course of a single day. "This year is a very crazy year," sighed Jamie Lin, a board member of Wikimedia Taiwan. "A lot of Taiwanese Wikipedians have been attacked." Edit wars Wikipedia is a movement as much as a website. Anyone can ...

Iranian hackers targeted US 2020 campaign, says Microsoft

FEATURED, Latest News, TECH
Hackers that appear to be linked to Iran's government have targeted the 2020 US presidential election, according to tech company Microsoft. The group attacked more than 200 email accounts, some of which belonged to people associated with "a US presidential campaign", it said. The target was President Donald Trump's re-election campaign, sources told Reuters news agency. Iran has not yet publicly commented on the allegations. A spokesman for the Trump campaign said it had no indication it had been targeted. What did Microsoft announce? "Today we're sharing that we've recently seen significant cyber activity by a threat group we call Phosphorus, which we believe originates from Iran and is linked to the Iranian government," a Microsoft statement reads. Phosphorus, i...

Facebook encryption threatens public safety, say ministers

FEATURED, Latest News, TECH
UK Home Secretary Priti Patel and counterparts in the US and Australia have sent an open letter to Facebook calling on it to rethink its plans to encrypt all messages on its platforms. The policy threatens "lives and the safety of our children", they said. They said it could hamper international efforts to grant law enforcers faster access to private messages on social media, as agreed between the UK and US. Facebook said "people have the right to have a private conversation online." The head of Facebook-owned WhatsApp Will Cathcart had previously posted on Hacker News: "End-to-end encryption protects that right for over a billion people every day." Facebook said it is "consulting closely with child safety experts, governments and technology companies and devoting new teams...

Manchester City confirm Mendy hamstring injury

FEATURED, Latest News, SPORTS
Benjamin Mendy has suffered a hamstring injury but should return after the international break, Manchester City have confirmed.   The France international made his first start of the season in the 8-0 mauling of Watford on September 21, a game in which he came off at half-time.  Mendy played the full 90 minutes as City beat Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League in midweek but he was replaced by Joao Cancelo for the visit of Wolves in the Premier League on Sunday.  The 25-year-old has endured an injury nightmare since joining from Monaco for £52million in July 2017, making just 18 Premier League appearances after twice undergoing knee surgery.  Mendy has not been included in the France squad for their upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against ...

Fraser-Pryce wins ninth world title in relay

FEATURED, Latest News, SPORTS
The 32-year-old, who won her fourth world 100m title last Sunday, ran a storming second leg to put Jamaica firmly in the driving seat. Shericka Jackson had a big enough lead to breach the line in 41.44 seconds with Britain's 200m world champion Dina Asher-Smith anchoring her team to the silver (41.85sec). For Asher-Smith, it completed a superb championshps as she also took silver in the 100m. Defending champions the United States rounded off an underwhelming championshps for their 100/200m women sprinters, taking bronze in 42.10sec.

FEATURED, Latest News, SPORTS
The 29-year-old came home clear of compatriot Margaret Kipkemboi, who timed a personal best 14min 27.49. Germany's Konstanze Klosterhalfen, part of the Nike-backed Oregon Project whose head coach Alberto Salazar was banned for four years earlier in the week, took bronze in 14min 28.43sec. Obiri had shared the early pace setting with British runner Eilish McColgan. With eight laps to go Obiri stepped up the pace and McColgan dropped back -- Ethiopia's Teshay Gemechu on her shoulder and Klosterhalfen third. They were part of a six runner group who, with six laps to the finish, had dropped the rest of the field. Gemechu dropped away to the back of the sextet leaving Klosterhalfen in second spot followed by two Kenyans. The six stuck together as the race approached the busin...

MotoGP Raceweek: Masterful Marquez claims sixth premier class title

FEATURED, Latest News, SPORTS
Marc Marquez secured his sixth MotoGP premier class world title with a dramatic victory at the Thailand Grand Prix, as Fabio Quartararo was cruelly denied a maiden race win. Marquez, who has now been crowned champion in six of his seven seasons at the highest level, edged out Quartararo on the final corner to leave the Frenchman crestfallen. Yamaha rider Quartararo, who started on pole for the fourth time this season, led for the vast majority of the race only to eventually be passed by Repsol Honda rider Marquez in the closing stages. There was almost a sensational final twist as Quartararo briefly sneaked back ahead at the final turn, but he could not make the move stick and cut a frustrated figure as Marquez celebrated yet another success. With four rac...

The Japanese has endured an up-and-down year but now shapes as the form player heading into the WTA Finals later this month, having earned the second Premier Mandatory title of her career 19 months on from a breakthrough success in Indian Wells. "I just really wanted to win here, I felt I had something to prove," said Osaka in the on-court presentation.
