ELECTION WATCH: Increasing incidents of Violence on Campaign trail

ELECTION WATCH: Increasing incidents of Violence on Campaign trail

Latest News, Politics
It is unfortunate that political campaigns are becoming volatile, with incidents of violence. Campaigns are supposed to be civil, to help political candidates to popularize their manifestos. The running battles between security, candidates and supporters however can’t permit stakeholders to harness the real meaning of the campaigning period. Some of the actions of security agencies are very high-handed, reckless and could result in fatalities – if not checked. In some instances, the behavior of candidates’ supporters is provocative. It is unfortunate that many candidates and their supporters are not paying attention to the SOPs designed to prevent the spread of Covid-19. It is prudent at this point that the Electoral Commission (EC) stops barking and begins to bite. The EC fro...

Tottenham to Sign Gareth Bale.

FEATURED, Latest News, SPORTS
Tottenham are hopeful of signing Gareth Bale permanently next summer for as little as £13.5 million, according to reports in Italy. The Wales international rejoined Spurs from Real Madrid on loan this summer after falling out of favour at the Bernabeu following the return of Zinedine Zidane as head coach in March 2019. That deal did not include an option to buy. However, Calciomercato reports Jose Mourinho is keen to strike an agreement to sign Bale, who has made six appearances so far since his return to north London, on a permanent basis. Bale will have one year remaining on his contract when he returns to Real Madrid next summer, and the reported £13.5m fee Tottenham hope to agree is what he would receive in wages for the 2021/22 season. Arsenal and Real Madrid Stunned as Liverpool is held by Man City

FEATURED, Latest News, SPORTS
Liverpool's hopes of returning to the Premier League summit were frustrated as they fought out a high-quality draw at Manchester City, while both Arsenal and Real Madrid suffered unexpected defeat on Sunday.  Manchester City were left to rue Kevin De Bruyne's missed penalty as Liverpool escaped from the Etihad Stadium with a point for the first time in four seasons after a 1-1 draw. A flying start from the Reds was rewarded with Mohamed Salah's 13th minute penalty, but Gabriel Jesus leveled for Pep Guardiola's men before De Bruyne failed to hit the target from the spot three minutes before halftime. A share of the points between the sides that have combined to win the title for the past three seasons leaves Liverpool in third just a point off the top, while City sit five...

More than a dozen people have been killed in two attacks near Beni in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo that were blamed on the Islamist ADF group, local sources said Sunday. Late Saturday, an initial assault killed seven people, territorial administrator Donat Kibwana told an AFP correspondent, adding that "the attack took place at 11:00 pm and it was the ADF", which originated in the 1990s as an Ugandan Muslim rebel group. Kibwana said the toll was still provisional and that the attack occurred at a town called Kisima. A second assault took place early Sunday near Oicha, which is in the same region as Beni, where the local authority and other sources said six people had died. The ADF is one of more than 100 militias that plague the eastern provinces of the vast DR Congo. ...

Uganda’s cash crackdown on GiveDirectly.

FEATURED, Latest News, Politics
The U.S. Agency for International Development has terminated a $10 million cash transfer program run by GiveDirectly in Uganda, after the government opened an investigation into the COVID-19 response effort and then decided to indefinitely suspend the organization’s operations. The time frame around the probe is unclear, as are its merits. The program launched in August in partnership with the Ugandan government and targeted 120,000 people in six cities, with plans to deliver each of them approximately $27 per month for three months. The use of direct cash transfers has increased dramatically in response to COVID-19 as a means of social protection that can be deployed rapidly to counteract income losses and stave off food insecurity and other harms. This cash transfer program was vetted b...
