Uganda North American Association Condemns Police Brutality Against Civilians

By Keefa Nuwahereza

Members of the Uganda North American Association (UNA) have come out to strongly condemn the acts of brutality that were committed by the Uganda against unarmed civilians on Wednesday, who were demanding for National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential aspirant Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.

Through a statement issued by the UNA president Henrietta Nairuba Wamala, the Association has since called upon all security forces in Uganda to observe human rights and strive at making peace, not war.

Here below is UNA’s statement about the unfortunate occurrences in Uganda, which left several innocent people dead, scores injured and property worth millions of shillings destroyed by rioters.

“Democracy is realized by granting people the freedom of expression. All Citizens should be given the right to freedom of expression and to support the candidates of their choice without being subjected to intimidation and violence.

We therefore strongly condemn and discourage these acts of violence and lawlessness and ask that the authorities carry out justice to the people whose human rights are abused. The police officers should restrain from acts of impunity as shown in Uganda today and every Presidential Candidate should be free to campaign without any form of intimidation but according to the guidelines stipulated by the Electoral Commission along with the SOPs for COVID-19.

Our sincere condolences to the families of those that lost their lives in this violent fracas.

Again, we echo our prior sentiments and call for a Free and Fair process as Uganda prepares for the January 2021 Elections. For God and Our Country Uganda!”
